The Dulles Greenway is a privately owned toll road that extends fourteen miles from Leesburg, Virginia to the Dulles International Airport and the Dulles Toll Road. The original Greenway construction project consisted of 56 lane miles and 40 miles of ramps and service roads. In 2000/2001 a portion of the road was widened to six lanes, expanding the useable lane miles to 66. The Greenway is the first private toll road in Virginia since 1816. During the original construction of the Greenway, Autostrade S.p.A. provided consulting support in the areas of toll collection equipment selection and testing, telecommunications, and development of standard operating procedures. During the widening project, the Director of Operations and Maintenance for AIV provided construction management services for the owner. The Greenway incorporates 'smart' highway technology, including electronic toll collection through the automatic vehicle identification system (AVI) and credit card payment availability at unmanned tollbooths.
